Insurance Companies, Medicaid and Medicare

• "significantly improves condition of client"

• "medically necessary"

• "prosthesis to replace organ or limb"

• "replace a non-functional part of client’s body"

• "other therapeutic and prosthetic services & supplies"

• "durable medical equipment"

• "improvement of a malformed body member"

• "restoration of client to best possible functional level"

Tips on Writing Effective Justifications
Show that the technology is medically necessary.

Example: Diagnosis: Cerebral Palsy

Technology Needed: Speech Prosthesis

Demonstrate that the disability is a medical problem and that using the technology would have a therapeutic effect by reducing frustrations.

And

Demonstrate that a speech prosthesis will increase the individuals ability to communicate with others, especially when communicating medical needs. (medical necessity)

If client is employable, describe how the device will help him/her gain a job.

State why this technology was chosen over others and include price.

When approaching insurance companies, Medicaid, Medicare, etc., the device must be for medical necessity.

    DO NOT: Label the technology as an education device, and

    DO NOT: Give the impression that it is a convenience item.
