Electric Pushbutton and Hand Shifters
for Amputees Riding Motorcycles and Trikes

I am an above knee (AK) amputee.  My Harley trike has both a Kliktronic electronic pushbutton shifter and a hand shifter.  The chrome extension tube was from a closet hanger rail I bought at the hardware store and was simply slid down over the rear foot shift lever (removed and reinstalled in a vertical position).  A "Mr. Gasket" skull shifter knob was purchased from a local auto supply store.

"Mr. Gasket" skull hand shifter knob on the end of a chrome hanger rail rod.  The skull is screwed on to the end of a standard 1/2" hex bolt which was friction fitted inside the tube by wrapping electrical tape around the bolt to make it fit tight in the chrome tube.

The Honda Rebel has a hand shifter made from a hollow 5/8" clothesline rod which I painted black.

Bracket with U-clamps mounted on stock Honda shift lever.  This method will work on almost any shift lever without drilling any holes.

For reference purposes only, the black shifter tube diameter fit perfectly inside the mounting bracket from a Stanley barrel bolt latch.  (You only need the part pictured at the left with the black tube attached. I later learned that I could have used a two-hole 5/8" EMT conduit clamp (not pictured), but I would have had to drill holes in the shift lever which I didn't want to do.

Electrical tape was neatly wrapped around the black shifter tube to increase its diameter so that it wouldn't slide down past the desired position when mounted vertical.  The black tube also pulls right up and out of the way if my wife wants to ride it as a normal motorcycle with a standard foot shifter.

The shifter ball knob was screwed on to a 1/2" hex bolt with SAE fine thread.  This will vary depending on the shift knob purchased.  The hex head was sawed off with a hacksaw to enable it to slide inside the 5/8" tube.

1/2" hex bolt shown with the head removed.  The two holes shown drilled in the bolt are not necessary, and I later decided to wrap electrical tape around the diameter of the bolt instead to make a friction-fit inside the hollow tube.  A friction fit is nice because it allows you to easily remove the shifter knob so thieves don't steal it when you are parked.

Electronic pushbutton solenoid shifters can be purchased directly from PINGEL, KLIKTRONIC or from the HAUSOFTRIKES website.

If you don't want to try to make one yourself, you can buy a bolt-on manual hand shifter from MOOSE at an ATV dealer.
